On Wednesday, Liam Payne’s family and friends gathered at St. Mary’s Church in Amersham, England, for his private funeral.

Payne’s One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan attended the solemn event. Many of them wore dark suits and sunglasses to the service.

A horse-drawn carriage carried Payne’s coffin to the church. On the coffin were white flowers and a red hanafuda with the word “son” written on it. At another point, someone was photographed walking through a churchyard carrying a flower arrangement with the word “Papa” written on it.

Liam, 31, died on October 16 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.
Payne’s body was held in Argentina for several weeks while authorities waited for toxicology tests to be completed before his family was able to bring him home earlier this month.

After his death, One Direction released a joint statement. Instagram It read: “We are completely devastated by the news of Liam’s death. In time, when we are all able to speak, we will have more to say. I’m going to take some time to grieve and come to terms with this.”
The group continued, “The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and all of us who loved him.” I’m talking about the fans who gave it to me.
They said: “We will miss him so much,” adding: “We love you, Liam.”
The message was signed: “Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry.”

Louis was the first individual band member to speak out about Liam’s death.
He wrote on Instagram: Liam was someone I looked up to every day, he was such a positive, funny and kind person. ” Read his full message here.
Later that day, Zayn Posted A photo of him taking a nap with Liam while on tour was captioned, “Love You Bro ❤️,” along with a long note of his own. Read his message here.
Styles later wrote on Instagram: “I am truly devastated by Liam’s death. His greatest joy was making others happy and it was an honor to be by his side as he did that. Read his message here.
Liam was in Buenos Aires to see Niall’s show in early October. Horan also wrote on Instagram about the last time she saw Liam, writing, “I feel so lucky to have met him recently. Sadly, after saying goodbye and hugging him that night, I will forever be forever grateful.” I didn’t know we were saying goodbye. I’m heartbroken.” Read his full message here.
