On January 22nd, a very sad-looking photo of six tortilla chips, several one-ounce jars of seasoning, and a few cilantro leaves on top of a stalk was posted on the platform formerly known as Twitter. It was discussed above. user, @MuTigerMikeMike Herman, Rio’s head of slot operations, also wrote above his photo: @fblasvegas, we waited an hour for the food listed in the sportsbook and here are our nachos??? Come on, man. ”
The nacho plate in question was from Tavern, a sportsbook restaurant located at the new Fontainebleau in Las Vegas. As soon as the Twitter post was posted on his web, three things happened. First, the photo went viral among Las Vegas locals, who jumped on board to criticize the Strip’s newest casino, which has only been open for a little over a month. The hashtag “#Nachogate” was then born. And perhaps most shockingly, Fontainebleau did something almost unprecedented. They’ve taken the nacho plate and made it more worthy of the $21 price tag.
So what factors make nachos generally worth a higher price? Even in Las Vegas, charging $21 for nachos is a bold move and offering premium toppings (like Ghost Donkey’s $23 nachos with shaved black truffle or Nacho Daddy’s $29 nachos with filet mignon). Or, at least, that you’re getting a fair amount of nachos. Also, the tavern that serves adobo chicken nachos is located in the same building that serves $1,000 steaks and $95 fries.
After the initial post went viral, other casinos in the city began showing off their restaurants’ nachos. For example, the Four Queens joined in the action at the downtown casino.
Silverton Casino in the Southwest also took notice of #nachogate.
And Nacho Daddy, a Mexican restaurant in Las Vegas that has only posted on X once since November 2023, began retweeting dozens of mentions.
The nacho frenzy culminated in a post from Fontainebleau Casino itself. The post featured a plate of more substantial nachos with the caption, “Tavern’s menu is designed to be ‘Adult Bar Food Favorites.'” We hope you’ll forgive us for our growing pains while nachos goes through an awkward phase. We are excited to report that they have grown into his one stacked snack. ”
