Rachel Zegler and Jennifer Lewis sit down with Extra’s Mona Kosar Abdi to talk about their new animated musical adventure, Spellbound!
The film tells the story of a princess (Zegler) who is on a mission to save her parents, who have been turned into monsters by a dark spell. Jennifer plays Nazara, one of the princess’s advisors.
Jennifer explained: “‘Spellbound’ is all about it, for kids and for adults. It’s a journey through true humanity because it deals with issues. A baby is scratching a cavity in the darkness. She has to go through it, and she can’t pull out the weeds to learn something, she has to go to the root of the pain. I love that about this movie.”
Rachel and Jennifer, who just met after recording their parts separately, raved about their instant connection.
Jennifer explained, “This chemistry is kind of weird,” and Rachel insisted, “We need a TV show.”
Rachel also spoke passionately about her time as a princess in this film and the upcoming live-action version of Snow White, and shared how great an honor it is to inspire young people.
“I pinch myself all the time,” she said. “I have a picture of me when I was about three years old wearing a little Snow White costume. [my mom] They found it and sent it to me, and it was like… I can’t believe this is my life and that costume is my job. ”
Rachel continued, “It’s going to be something that little girls and young people will see and believe that they can do it. It doesn’t matter what you look like or where you come from, it’s possible for you. It’s such an honour.” It feels like a dream come true to be able to bring that to life on the animated screen in “Spellbound.”
Lewis is a veteran when it comes to voice acting, saying, “I’ve done 13 roles now, in 13 different voices, from “Rugrats” to this role, that role, and that role. You know, “Cars.” ‘ is not yet,” he said. Continuing with video games and ‘The Princess and the Magic Kiss’, they are bringing the series [‘Tiana’]”
Rachel also talked about working with legendary composer Alan Menken on the music for Spellbound.
