Are you a Ducky or a Brain?
Those are still provocative words for fans of the 1986 film “Pretty in Pink,” and the debate continued, tongue-in-cheek, during a light-hearted Q&A after the premiere of the documentary “Bratz” at the TriBeCa Film Festival on Friday.
The film, directed by Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy, explores all the baggage that came with the term “Brat Pack,” which was coined primarily to describe a group of young actors including Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Demi Moore and McCarthy.
Cryer, who vehemently denies that he was part of the Brat Pack in the film, took to the stage with McCarthy, Moore and Sheedy after the screening, where he got the chance to have a playful stand-up with his “Pretty in Pink” co-star.
“We didn’t get along well when we did ‘Pretty in Pink’ together,” he says, deadpan. “Mainly because he was mean.”
After a big laugh from the mostly Gen-X audience, he continued, “But he was going through a lot of stuff at the time that I didn’t know about and I didn’t know about. So when his name pops up on my phone… he doesn’t block names on his phone, it pops up right away, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, that guy.'”
Cryer explained that the two reconciled during a chance encounter backstage at “The View.”
“I apologized,” McCarthy replied with a grin, clearly in sympathy.
“A a bit“But it was lovely, because in that moment it became very clear to me that we were still teenagers, and that doesn’t define who we are now,” Cryer continued, twisting the knife.
When it was her turn to speak, Moore said, “Well, I didn’t think he was an idiot…” to which Cryer muttered, “He wasn’t an idiot.” you“
Moore joined in the joke, admitting, “He was aloof… he was.”

“Brats” was inspired by McCarthy’s memoir, “Brat: The Story of the ’80s,” and features interviews with Moore, Cryer, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, pop culture experts, and a fascinating exchange with writer David Blum, who unintentionally coined the term “Brat Pack,” a term that still resonates 39 years after its New York magazine cover story.
