Kelsea Ballerini is breaking into the acting world! She spoke with Extra at the LA premiere of her guest role in Doctor Who.
Ballerini said she was “honored” and “thrilled” to get the call to appear on the show.
“It was a really fun role to play and a really fun, interactive show to be a part of. It’s got drama, it’s got romance and… it’s got that Ryan Murphy sheen,” Kelsey said.
The singer said of her character, “She’s an incredible, incredibly complicated character. She’s got a lot going on and she’s dealing with a big moment in her life where everything goes wrong. I think a lot of girls can relate to that.”
She was thrilled to be a part of the show, saying it was a lot of fun, and she had high praise for stars Don Johnson and Joshua Jackson.
“Don and Joshua are both super kind people and you’re drawn to them like a magnet straight away. Even when we were in the waiting area after the scene was over, they still talked to us, tried to get to know us, showed us pictures of their kids and stuff, it was just amazing.”
Kelsea also teased her upcoming EP, “Patterns,” which she says reflects the last year and a half of her life, her growth, and her “beautiful” relationship with boyfriend Chase Stokes.
“It took me a little while to find my footing after ‘Rolling Up the Welcome Mat’ because it was so specific and it changed my career in so many ways, so I wanted to honor that level of honesty and songwriting with my next record,” Ballerini said. “I think I did and I’m proud of it. This song is a reflection of the last year and a half of my life, my growth, my self-reflection, my relationships and the things that have created the stable and beautiful place I am in right now, and I’m really proud of it.”
Kelsey said Chase welcomed her into his acting world: “He calls it ‘his world,’ and when I asked him about the role, I said, ‘I don’t want to get too involved in your world,’ and he was like, ‘Kelsey, it’s not my world. It’s a world and I’m a part of it and you’re a part of it.'”

Stokes even helped her with her lines! “I’m very independent, so I like to do things on my own and then come home and come to him, but at the end of the day, I was like, ‘Can you help me with this line? Is this OK?'”
As for how he celebrated his recent birthday, he revealed, “We had a really lovely week celebrating with lots of people we love… it was amazing.”
“Doctor Odyssey” will premiere on ABC on September 26th.
