“SNL’s” Bowen Yang, newcomer Han Ji Chang, Oscar winner Lily Gladstone and “Star Wars” actress Kelly Marie Tran starred in “Wedding Banquet” as two gay couples making secret arrangements.
Asia Celestino, special correspondent for “Extras,” spoke with Pho about the romantic comedy.
When Kelly stepped onto the set, she hadn’t been revealed yet.
Tran said, “We were filming a Korean wedding and there was a reporter from Vanity Fair on set. I remember it was completely decorated throughout this whole situation. It was in the middle of the day, this little corner room where we were interviewing. And I was like, “I’m very excited to talk about strange things as a strange person,” and I was like, “Yeah.”
Kelly Marie pointed out that the producers checked in with her to make sure she was OK with that part of her identity.
She said, “It took me a few months to really think about it.” [it]. ”
“By the time filming was over, I was very excited to be appearing in a film celebrating that part of my identity,” Tran added. “A lot of our identities. Why don’t I share this?”
Bowen responded to “White Lotus” star Amy Lowood, criticising her character’s recent “SNL” parody as “despicable and unfair.”
He said, “But it’s perfectly valid that she responded to that sketch. You forget the emotional cost of a person that would make it praised by someone.”
“You sometimes need those reminders, and the parody of that can sometimes go too far, and we can consider that as our comedians, we can say that we should be allowed to slap our feet and say that it’s just culture and that we should be allowed to say anything we want,” Bowen emphasized.
Yang said the “SNL” cast is a fan of “The White Lotus” and Aimee Lou, saying, “I think she should be very proud of the film she has entered this season.”
The “wedding banquet” will be held on April 18th.
