Solaris Entertainment is developing a documentary about groundbreaking comedy writers Anne Beatzher former business partner Eve Brandstein and Solaris managing partner Michael Bloom announced exclusively to TheWrap on Friday.
Beetz, who died in 2021, was the first woman to write the script for Saturday Night Live, paving the way for more women to enter the comedy field, and Brandstein will join John in 2022. Co-directed and produced the Lennon documentary The Lost Weekend. : a love story,” he said.

Brandstein and Beetz first worked together in 1982 on the hit series Square Pegs starring Sarah Jessica Parker. “[Anne] Came from New York and the whole “SNL” scene. At that point I was a little in awe of her talent as a comedian,” Brandstein said. She teamed up with Beatz again for Just Say Julie, starring ‘Earth Girls Are Easy’ writer Julie Brown.
“There were very few women doing that. We were pioneers,” Brandstein added. “I think her legacy is that she made women feel comfortable with this as a professional opportunity.”
In a statement to TheWrap, Bloom revealed the project’s working title as “The Girl Who would Be King.”
“Anne is a trailblazer and has certainly paved the way for those who follow her… viewers go from National Lampoon to SNL to Square Peg to teaching at USC, UCLA and Chapman University.” You’ll get to know Anne’s journey to take,” Bloom said. . “We’re going to hear from the people she’s influenced, done her work, and worked with.”
“She was quietly intelligent and knew more about comedy than 99% of people who worked in comedy. She would tell you something funny anytime, anywhere,” Bloom said. He listed Tina Fey as a “long-time admirer” of the Beats.
Faye may have based some of Liz Lemon’s writer idol Rosemary Howard (memorably played by Carrie Fisher) characters on Beatz.
“In my pitch, I described her as a cactus fruit. “But when I opened it, it was so juicy and sweet. That was Ann.”
