To ensure the comfort and safety of its visitors, the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, has installed cutting-edge air purification technology. The Technical Administration Authority, which is responsible for managing the mosque’s electromechanical systems, revealed extensive measures taken to maintain the pristine environment within the holy site.
Using ultraviolet (UV) light for disinfection, the air from the mosque’s air conditioning units is purified nine times a day. This innovative approach aims to eliminate harmful microorganisms and viruses and ensure the health of worshipers and visitors.

The Grand Mosque boasts one of the world’s largest cooling systems capable of providing up to 155,000 tonnes of cooling capacity. This impressive feat is accomplished by strategically placed air conditioning units that provide constant cool air throughout the sacred space.
The cooling system, which operates through two main stations at Kudi and Shamiya and Ajyad station, 900 meters from the mosque, generates an impressive refrigeration capacity of 120,000 tons. This elaborate process cools water to 4-5 degrees Celsius and uses heat exchange in a mechanical air handling unit to release purified and cooled air.
Recent upgrades by the agency include replacing heat exchangers and air filters, as well as comprehensive updates to air handling units. These enhancements ensure consistent air purification and maintain the highest standards of cleanliness within the mosque.
Saudi engineers and technicians diligently monitor temperature levels, humidity, and system operation to maintain optimal conditions. Balancing airflow based on visitor density ensures that both thermal comfort and energy efficiency are maintained.
Additionally, strict maintenance protocols are followed to ensure the system is in perfect working order. This includes adhering to technical guidelines and implementing strict security and safety measures.
