Brownsville, Texas (valley central) — Brownsville police are searching for a man suspected of fatally shooting his son-in-law during a dispute over money.
Police said the shooting occurred Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the 1900 block of E. Tyler.
When officers arrived, they found the victim, later identified as Alfredo Zapata, 51, with a gunshot wound to the right side of his head.
An initial investigation revealed that Zapata’s mother called 911 to report that the victim’s stepfather, Juan Rodriguez Valencia, 74, had shot her son over money.
Zapata was taken alive to a local hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries.
Police said Valencia fled the scene and information gathered by the Brownsville Police Criminal Investigation Division confirmed that Valencia crossed the International Bridge into Matamoros after the shooting.
Police say they are currently actively investigating.
