Sen. John Fetterman acknowledged Sunday that former President Trump and Vice President Harris could compete on equal terms in a debate, saying that no matter what happens at Tuesday’s ABC News presidential debate in Philadelphia, “it’s going to be a close battle.”
Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat, made the remarks during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” in response to a question about what Harris needs to do in the debate to win the support of primary voters in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.
“I’ll also just say that this is going to be a head-to-head debate,” Fetterman said, “Obviously she’s going to do great, but Donald Trump is going to be great too. Everybody remembers that he blew every Republican out of the park. He’s a great debater. But at the end of the day, I don’t think this debate is going to be decisive, because it comes down to this choice, and it’s going to be a close race.”
Fetterman said Pennsylvania “will always be a close race” in presidential election voting and believes voters’ attention will be focused on “order” versus “chaos.”

“I think the vast majority of Pennsylvanians will decide that they want four more years of order and fairness and unity and a new path forward in a positive direction, and I don’t think they want the kind of dark days and chaos that Donald Trump has brought to our country,” the senator said.
