Whether the band Reversing Radio has performed in Tahlequah or other cities, the group has adapted its music to suit each audience.
The four-piece band started playing together in 2013, said Jeffrey Jones, owner of Zomak School of Music and drummer for Reversing Radio.
“We’re all a cover band. We don’t write our own songs,” Jones said. “It’s literally ‘reverse radio.’ We bring all the radio hits back to you.”
Original members of the group included Jeffrey Jones, Burt Culver, Chris Tracy, and David Calvert. Tracy and Calvert have since left the group, and their roles have now been taken over by John VanDerveer and Michael Rappe.
“We have three singers and they’re great, and it’s just getting bigger and better and better,” Jones said.
In addition to performing regularly at the Cherokee Casino Tahlequah, the group also tends to perform at private parties and business events, Jones said.
Reversing Radio doesn’t stick to one genre. We play rock, country, classic rock, red dirt, pop, and hip-hop.
“To be successful as a copy band, you have to be very diverse, and that’s what we are,” Jones said. “Like I said, we’re not writing music and we’re not trying to push an agenda of going on a world tour. We’re just a party band, but we’re one of the best in the area. We try to be a party band.”
Jones said the group can adapt to the tastes and preferences of most audiences, with some audiences wanting to listen to more country music and others preferring pop music. Being able to play for anyone and with anyone is a personal goal of Jones’ own.
“I don’t want to be a one-trick pony,” Jones said. “I want to be a guy who can fill in at any show, and that’s what I put together in a band, a group of guys who can do that.
“We don’t just play country every night. We don’t just play rock, because not everyone in the audience wants rock. We go into every set, to every person. We want to provide something for them.”
The band has been together for more than 10 years, and Jones said the musical group gives its members a break from their regular jobs.
