Sandro Mamukelashvili made NBA history and gave an incredible performance against the New York Knicks. San Antonio Spurs Forward/Centre became the first player to score 34 points while playing within 20 minutes of the game.
Record performance in just 19 minutes
Mamukelashvili shot an astonishing 13/13 from the field, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the 3-point range. Out of the bench, he also provided nine rebounds and three assists in just 19 minutes of play. The 26-year-old Georgian player scored 13 points in the first half, but his explosive fourth quarter, when he scored 21 points, earned the Spurs 120-105 victory over the Knicks.
His performance is a bright spot in the tough season for the Spurs, who have struggled with injuries to major players such as Victor Wenbagnama (shoulder thrombosis) and Dearon Fox (pinky surgery). Typically, Mamkerashvili, who averaged 9 minutes and 5 minutes per game, seized the opportunity and provided one of the most efficient performances in NBA history.
A new star with deep basketball roots
Mamukelashvili’s journey to the NBA is just as remarkable as his record night. Born in New York but raised in Georgia, he hone his skills at the Biera Youth Academy in Italy before returning to the US in 2016. He joined the Spurs in 2022 and has been working to create his own name ever since.
His 34-point explosion put him inside the elite company. Previously, the most points scored so far in under 20 minutes was 33 by Jaylen Brown, followed by Kevin Love (32) and Kevin Durant (30). Mamukelashvili is currently only at the top of that list.
In addition to spectacle, the legendary hip-hop flavours have rushed the court after the game to celebrate with the mum kelashbili, a fitting night in NBA history. With such a performance, the Spurs may have found an unexpected star in their ranks.
