Liam Payne, 31, a former member of One Direction, was declared dead in October 2024 after falling from the third floor of the Casasur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Kate Cassidy, who had been with the singer for two years at the time of her death, revealed how she discovered Payne’s death on Jay Shetty’s “intentional” podcast. Cassidy was in Florida when she received a call from one of the singer’s friends.
This made her “freakout” and “panic” when she began calling to learn about Payne’s whereabouts. “The only update I’ve heard is that Liam’s…dead. At that moment I still didn’t believe it was true. There was no way, but there was just a small part of me in my head in my head, why is someone making up for this?” she recalled.
When another friend confirmed that the singer was no longer there, Cassidy said, “I still didn’t really believe it. I thought, ‘No, no, you’re probably… he just broke the bone. He broke the rib. He broke something.” For those who weren’t aware, Cassidy was in Argentina with the singer, but she went home a few days before his death.
She recalled her final conversation with Payne. Payne said that the last day she was able to touch, hug and talk to him, that would bring her a “mixture of pain and peace.” According to an account shared by Cassidy, she had a “great breakfast” and after “riding” with him, she said sincerely goodbye to him.
“I remember sitting with him, and I had been going on many times, and I was telling Liam how much I loved him. And he interrupted me, and he just interrupted me, and he just said, “You’re going to miss your flight. Your car is going to see me again,” she said, “I know I’m stupid.”
Cassidy said, “In a way, I think I’m very blessed in the way we said goodbye to each other. This is where I get peace from it… I wouldn’t have hoped it would be different.
Meanwhile, Payne’s sister Ruth Gibbins took her to Instagram to share a heartbreaking note about how difficult it can be to go on through life without a singer. “Six months, six months without you! My head is still screaming for you. I wake up every morning, I plunge into the water and never soften me. It’s impossible to live without you. We are always carrying the sadness of how unfair it is that we can’t make something new, like last year when we doubled over us trying to make something we saw on YouTube,” she writes.
Payne’s sister continued. But I know that you know this, I will meet you in my dreams.
Payne’s preliminary autopsy report after a fatal fall confirmed that the singer was killed from multiple injuries and internal bleeding from a fall from his hotel balcony. Payne’s tragic death sent shockwaves into the world of music and entertainment.
