Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn take us back in time in the new prequel, A Quiet Place: Day One, which reveals the terrifying events of the first hours of a deadly alien invasion.
They spoke to Extra about the film, with Quinn joking that it “feels oddly familiar,” adding that “running away from what you can’t see is becoming a common habit.”
Joseph, who is known for his role in Stranger Things, continued, “The show had challenges and obstacles to overcome, but most of all it was really funny.”
Lupita admitted that she was “anxious” about taking on the role of Samira.
She said: “It was scary to take on this role and get into that state of mind. The character that I’m playing has a completely different life experience to the one that I’m having. Of course I was nervous at first, but I think I just put in the work, did my research and went there. It’s hard to give away a map, but the fact that Samira asked me to do something different to what I’ve done before and different to my own life experience was really fun.”
They also spoke about the challenges of not being able to use their voices.
Quinn said, “It was certainly required, so it made it easier, but a movie set itself is not a quiet place. There’s a lot going on, a lot of people talking, a lot of noise, so we had to double down on the realism to keep it quiet even when there was a helicopter flying overhead.”
Nyong’o added: “I was thrown into silence and I had to just succumb, because not being able to use your voice is very specific and debilitating in a very particular way.”
Joseph also teased his upcoming projects Gladiator II and The Fantastic Four, and joked that Lupita gave him his “10 Marvel commandments.”

“I can’t say anything. They’re going to target the people I care about,” he joked.
Joseph confirmed, “Gladiator is done. That’s it. It’s been a great experience. I’ll be starting Fantastic Four at the end of July.”
Could Black Panther star Lupita appear in The Fantastic Four? “We’d be lucky if she did,” he said.
Nyong’o responded, “I gave him Marvel’s Ten Commandments.”
“A Quiet Place: Day 1” will be released on June 27th.
