Jet suit technology and speed
The jet suit boasts 1,500 horsepower, more than most luxury sports cars, and uses the same type of fuel that powers giants of the sky like the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777.
This race was not only a testament to the sheer power, but also the safety and maneuverability of these futuristic suits. Flying at speeds of up to 80 miles per hour, competitors took off, overcame obstacles, and even gracefully returned from aerial steps.

There was a dramatic moment during the race when Emirati pilot Ahmed Al-Shehhi crashed into the water during his heat, went into the water on his feet but quickly surfaced and gave a thumbs-up to his rescuers.
In the photo below, you can see him being pulled out of the water and carried away in a boat. The announcer pointed out that Al Shehhi had only 12 days of training before the race.

Pilot Issa Calfon, who ultimately won the race and held up the golden jet turbine triumphantly, admitted that she was nervous every time she flew. But jet suits are safe and easy to handle, he said.
