almost all of us are affected cancer. It doesn’t matter if you’re a young kid, the governor of Maryland, the US Senator, or the President of the United States.
For one of us, it happened shortly after I became governor of Maryland. Diagnosed. As I tackled this challenge and ruled the state from my hospital bed, I was fortunate enough to meet many incredible people who had fought much harder battles than I did.
For another of us, cancer struck when it took the life of my best friend and former chief of staff too soon. Norma Jane was a true friend, trusted advisor, passionate advocate for the state of Louisiana, and a beacon of light to all who were fortunate enough to know and loved her. , she went from being a thriving force in local, state, and national politics to another victim of breast cancer in just a few short years.

As a result of these challenges and tragedies, we have pledged to always stand by all those battling this terrible disease. To supplement the investment, it meant launching the historic $216 million Maryland Cancer Moonshot Initiative.

As the Biden administration rolls out a “National Cancer Plan” this month, Washington cuts unnecessary bureaucratic red tape to give patients access to breakthroughs and powerful intellectual property to encourage innovation. Breakthrough new cancer treatments that can help realize this important bipartisan goal by supporting protection.
Fortunately, we have already made great strides in this battle. Since the early 1990s, cancer mortality has been steadily declining. Between 2001 and 2017, overall cancer mortality decreased by 1.8% in men and 1.4% in women. A similar decline was seen in children from 2013 to 2017.
Consider one cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL), which affects more than 200,000 Americans and their families. Her 5-year relative survival rate for those diagnosed with HL has more than doubled since the early 1960s, largely due to advances in treatment. Today, HL is considered one of the most curable cancers, with his 5-year relative survival rate of approximately 89%.

This progress would not have been possible without a policy environment that recognized the need to find a cure. There is no substitute for strong intellectual property protection that supports the innovation needed to drive new treatments and innovation. Without this commitment across the aisle over the decades, this successful innovation that has advanced oncology research and development arguably would not have been seen.
As we work to drive further progress, private markets are already up for the challenge. In 2021, oncology trial starts will reach a historic high, up 56% from five years ago. In the same year, a record number of new active substances (NAS) in oncology were launched.
More recently, we have seen the biopharmaceutical sector make significant investments in the future of oncology. In 2022, Bristol-Myers Squibb announced a merger with his Turning Point Therapeutics, a company specializing in precision oncology research.
In March of this year, Pfizer made a significant investment to acquire Seagen, a company that uses innovative technologies to develop cancer treatments for patients. This breakthrough therapy with antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) is a class of drugs designed as targeted therapies to treat cancer. Unlike chemotherapy, ADCs aim to target and kill tumor cells while sparing healthy cells.

By mid-2022, nearly 50% of the FDA’s total pipeline will be for new cancer treatments, and 27% of new drug and biologics approvals will be for cancer. These developments will spur life-saving results for people affected by cancer and enable the life sciences industry to devote more money to discovering new, more effective treatments. has already helped. A cancer diagnosis is no longer considered a death sentence.
There are steps Washington can take immediately to support these efforts and ensure that this progress benefits the patients most at risk. As we move forward, governments must use their powers to protect the pipeline of life-saving innovations.

Finally, Washington must ensure that changes to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) accelerated approval pathway don’t prevent cancer patients and their families from accessing these desperately needed treatments. .
Not long ago, beating this disease seemed like a pipe dream. Now every day we are closer to achieving this moonshot. With Washington acting as a partner in supporting new and innovative treatments that will change the future of cancer care for all of us, we can tackle this deadly disease for all.
