Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) speculated Thursday that Pennsylvania’s trend toward red may be related to former President Donald Trump’s tariff proposals. The senator-turned-vice presidential candidate was a Republican 20 years ago because of his belief that the 45th president would “make things in America and put a great Made in USA label on more products.” He said he believes President Trump’s message resonates more in Pennsylvania.
Vance cited statistics that he said were “really scary,” noting that China accounts for 32% of global manufacturing GDP, meaning 32% of goods made worldwide are made in China. In contrast, only 18% were made in the United States.

“That means China is manufacturing more things. I’m talking about the medicines we put in our children’s bodies, some of the critical weapons systems of the future, computers. It’s about chips,” he said. “We have to build more of our own in America, and the way to do that is by deregulating, lowering energy costs for American businesses, and rebuilding our great American middle class.”
