Listeria monocytogenes and E. coli were found during testing of unpasteurized raw milk from German farms.
From 2020 to 2022, the Stuttgart Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Authority (CVUA) tested 54 raw milk samples from vending machines for various pathogens.
Parameters examined included somatic cell counts, total bacterial counts, spoilage organisms, hygiene indicator bacteria such as Enterobacteriaceae and Escherichia coli, pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter, and Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). was
The sale of raw milk is basically prohibited, but it can be sold directly on the farm using self-service vending machines. Producers should issue notices telling consumers to boil raw milk before consuming it.
30 samples were compliant and 24 had problems. The results highlight the importance of regular cleaning of milking machines, pipes and tanks on dairy farms, the scientists said. Inadequate cooling can also lead to contamination of raw milk.
A total of 52 samples were analyzed for Pseudomonas, and 16 had a bacterial content greater than 104 colony forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL). Enterobacteriaceae were tested in 53 samples, 13 of which exceeded 103 CFU/mL. Scientists say the detection of Pseudomonas and Enterobacteriaceae may indicate that the milk vending machine or equipment is not properly cleaned.
In total, 53 samples were tested for indicator E. coli and 5 exceeded 102 CFU/mL.
Salmonella and Campylobacter were not detected by any tests. STEC He was detected in 7 samples. Three tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. His two of these had less than 10 CFU/g, while the other positives had higher levels.
Pathogen detection may indicate sanitary deficiencies in raw milk collection and handling. It also shows that preventive measures need to be validated and ways to improve hygiene on dairy farms need to be initiated, the scientists said.
They added that the positive results for listeria and STEC underscore the need for self-service raw milk vending machines to display boiling notifications. At-risk groups such as small children, pregnant women, the elderly, and the sick are advised not to drink raw milk without boiling it first.
Broader jobs in 2022
In another analysis, Some of my work for 2022Baden-Württemberg, detected STEC in 4 out of 44 raw milk samples.
A child with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) had to be admitted to intensive care after drinking raw milk on a farm. Laboratory testing isolated her STEC from raw milk aggregate samples from herds, which did not match patient isolates provided by the hospital.
The number of samples sent to the Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, laboratory for food poisoning investigations has increased compared to 2021. In 2022, 765 samples associated with 297 incidents were processed in connection with suspected food-related illnesses. Sample numbers are higher than in 2021 and 2020, but below 2019 levels.
Food samples tested in four laboratories included Agona, Amsterdam, Bardo, Chester, Cologne, Derby, Enteritis, Havana, Infantis, Quintambo, Cottbus, Mbandaka, Newport, Orion, Paratyphoid, Senftenberg, Various types of Salmonella were detected, including Typhimurium. , and Virchow.
In one incident last year several young women contracted salmonella. Salmonella Mbandaka and Salmonella Chester have been identified, and epidemiological investigations have identified Asian restaurants as suspected sites of disease. Laboratory analysis detected Salmonella Chester and Salmonella Mbandaka in leeks and mushroom species.
At the end of 2021, a global salmonella outbreak associated with sesame products such as halva and tahini from Syria has emerged. As part of a special program for 2022, German authorities tested 69 halva and 60 tahini samples. A total of 11 tahini and 5 halvahi samples were positive for salmonella. Salmonella Amsterdam, Senftenberg, Havana, Kintambo, and Orion were identified.
Cases of Bacillus cereus poisoning date back to a restaurant that admitted to cooking mushrooms and keeping them warm until use. became. Tuna that wasn’t properly refrigerated was also behind several histamine incidents at restaurants.
