Elliot Page and Emmy Award winner Raver Lampman talk about the bittersweet fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy.
“Extra’s” Melvin Robert spoke with Elliott and Emmy about what they plan to take home with them when the show ends.
While Emmy gushed about the great friendships they formed, Elliott also expressed gratitude for how the show welcomed his gender transition.
Elliot spoke about how art imitated life during his gender transition, which later became a storyline for his character Victor Hargreeves.
“I’m so grateful that I was able to come out as transgender and be a part of the show and be welcomed and accepted and not pushed aside,” he said.
“It’s been such a blessing to play Victor these past four seasons. I’ve seen Victor change as I have and seen firsthand how much that meant to people. I’ll never forget that,” Elliot emphasized.
Melvin said Elliot was glowing with happiness, commenting: “Thank you for saying that. I’m so glad that you feel that way because I feel that way too… I’ll be honest with you, I used to be so sick and miserable but I’m so grateful that I had access to healthcare and all the different things that allow me to live the way I do now.”
Elliott explained that his gender transition has allowed him to experience acting from a new base, saying, “This new place, this new ability, being, being able to step into these places from this base is just a dream come true for me. I’m experiencing feelings that I never thought were possible. So if people want to cast a trans man, I’m happy to show that and to work with it.”
Elliot also offered advice to anyone struggling with who they are or loving who they are, saying, “When I think back to times in my life when I was so scared to admit things and move forward, I wish someone had said to me: ‘The shame you’re feeling isn’t yours, it’s theirs. Don’t get hung up on it.'”
Elliott also recalled struggling with indecision, thinking, “Am I or am I not? Should I or shouldn’t I?”
He recalled: “I thought to myself, ‘Why do I have to think like this? Why am I in such a terrible situation? [place]”‘This is how I feel. This is who I am. These are the steps I need to take to love myself. That noise is not about me.’ That mindset has really helped me, so if it helps anyone else, I want to say so.”
Emmy also learned a lot about herself from playing the role of Alison. She said, “I’d never been in front of a camera before I got this job, so I think that was a big lesson. I’m still learning, I have a lot to learn. But after coming back to the role all these years and learning so much during my time off, I think I was able to apply those lessons to this character and everything that Alison went through that season. I really treasured that and did the work and the research and tried to understand it.”
Emmy also learned a lot from the friendships she had with her co-stars: “I formed some of the strongest relationships of my life,” she says.
The Umbrella Academy season 4 will be available on Netflix from August 8th.
