Adrien Brody’s new film, The Brutalist, has been nominated for seven Golden Globes and is gaining awards season buzz.
Extra’s Adam Weissler spoke to Adrian, who plays a Jewish architect who escapes the horrors of World War II and rebuilds his life in Pennsylvania with his wife, played by Felicity Jones.
The film, which runs an impressive three-and-a-half hours including intermissions, marks another career-defining moment for Brody, who said he considered writing the script a “challenge.”
“This is what I was looking for, this is what I’ve been looking for for 20 years, and now it’s important that I address those challenges,” Adrian explained. “That’s what I’ve always wanted as an artist. We work in the film industry and everyone has to find something to feed themselves. I’ve had a lot of great opportunities and a lot of… I’ve had a great career with explorations of that, and I’m grateful for all of that. But again, there’s a level of maturity to this, beyond the complexity of the character that I represent. I think there are a lot of connections and a lot of personal connections that I can draw from and talk about.”
“I hope it doesn’t take another 20 years to find it, but it took that long to find something this big,” Brody said.
Adrian described his character, László Toth, as a “real human being” who “has deep flaws, addictions, conflicts and trauma, but is overcoming them,” and said it was a “joy” to play him.
Brody also responded to this praise and accolade, saying, “It’s great that your work has been recognized by people who know movies, love movies, and are hungry for movies of this caliber, and that your work has been chosen from a sea of talent that unfortunately didn’t get an award.” I’m very happy to be able to do that.” This opportunity is beyond words. Because I’ve been doing this all my life and it’s never left me. I’ve never really lost perspective because I’m always connected to acting and my life journey. Fellow Actors and How It’s Related to Other Artistic Pursuits as well…This longing to leave behind something important and how few of us have the opportunity to be recognized for the work we’ve dedicated our lives to. It’s really wonderful to be able to do that. ”
In 2003, Adrian won the Best Actor Oscar for “The Pianist.”
“The Brutalist” will be released on December 20th.
