Washington Nationals Reacts Results: Mitchell Parker; pitching in general = biggest surprises so far?

When we posted our latest poll on the SB Nation Reacts article asking people what they thought were the biggest surprises early this season, many commenters agreed that the two biggest surprises of the Nationals’ season were the options. I pointed out that I didn’t think it was on the list. …

One commenter commented on the veteran right-hander’s record (4 wins, 0 losses), 1.94 ERA, 2.82 FIP, .211/.272/.265 batting average, and the fact that “Trevor Williams is leaving.” wrote.After Williams led the National League with 34 HRs allowed last season, he gave up just 1-of-41. ²⁄₃ IPs so far in 2024.

“For me, it’s Williams,” another commenter agreed.

“If I had been offered it, that would have been my choice.”

“I voted for Mitchell Parker because that starting pitcher and the entire bullpen weren’t options,” another wrote.

“The Nats’ starting pitching was the biggest surprise.”

Fair enough, and we/I tend to agree in the original post (although we argued that the running game was the big surprise in early 2024).

Considering the options available, a majority favored rookie left-hander Mitchell Parker as the biggest surprise so far (42%).

Parker, a 24-year-old 2020 fifth-round pick, made his debut on April 15 on the road at Dodger Stadium, pitching an impressive five innings, and has a 3.09 ERA in six starts. He recorded a FIP of 3.42 and a batting average of .244. 32 IP’s /.281/.353 line.

Parker, who is ranked No. 20 in the organization on MLB Pipeline’s list of Nationals’ top prospects in 2020, has been on our radar for the past few seasons, but his rise has not made such a profound impact. I didn’t see that. So, I was pleasantly surprised.

So is the running game (and all the stolen bases) and Luis Garcia’s progress. There were some really pleasant surprises.

But yes, Trevor Williams and the success of the pitching staff in general should have been included as an option.
