Rapper Tory Lanez was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison after being convicted of three felony counts in the July 2020 shooting death of singer Megan Thee Stallion.
Lannes was convicted of assaulting Megan with a semi-automatic gun, firing the gun with gross negligence, and loading a loaded, unregistered firearm into a vehicle.
The unanimous verdict was decided by a Los Angeles Superior Court jury on December 23, 2022, after a nine-day trial.
“The jury was right,” Megan’s attorney Alex Spiro said in a statement at the time. “I am grateful that Meg has justice.”
NBC News coverage Lawyers for both sides cited several factors when considering Lannes’ possible sentence. Judge David Hereford has allowed seven witnesses to testify about the Canadian rapper’s childhood trauma, six-year-old son, and charitable donations.
Singer Iggy Azalea wrote a letter to the judge, urging him to make Troy’s sentence “not life-changing, but life-changing.”
She later shared her thoughts on Twitter as well. “I am not in favor of throwing someone’s life away if we can give them a reasonable punishment that leads to rehabilitation. I support prison reform. Period.”
Megan testified emotionally at trial.
“I’m shocked. I’m scared. I hear gunshots. I couldn’t believe he was shooting at me. He had a gun and he was pointing it at me,” Megan said in court last year. said during his testimony.
Megan said Lannes fired at her and said, “Dance, girl.”
