Where are all these people? That’s what I’ve been wondering about lately. In my youth, the focus was mostly local. Washington, DC has always looked far away. The TV news was local. Today, it seems to be the opposite of everything. Washington, DC appears to be at the heart of our orbit. When was one of us last seen local news?
The danger of this transition from local issues to national issues is that many of us, our people, have become dependent on Washington, D.C. for changes in our lives. It is true that what is happening in DC under the Trump administration is making a huge difference in our lives. But it is also true that most of the pressing issues we face are local in our community.
My fear is that with a focus on DC, there are too many people who do nothing at the local level. If that happens, the Trump presidency is a waste of opportunity. Trump is a man, and he only had four years to turn around a deep state that has been entrenched in corruption. But our people must be millions and what we want at the federal level and what we want at the local level.
Week 8 at Trump’s office will continue to take invasion level action and bring together the GOP to avoid closure
Perhaps my perspective is different from most. I live and work on the south side of Chicago and have seen what happens to people who have become so dependent on the government, especially the federal level. I saw that too many people had given up their will and believed that their government would come and save them. Instead, things got worse.
If they trusted themselves and invested in them and were in charge of the local community, can you imagine where my neighbours are today? Is there a shortage of small businesses, homeownership, and the lack of quality schools you currently own? I can absolutely say for sure: no.
Don’t get wrong what we did. I began to reverse this decline and regain my focus at the local level by building large community centers. We knew that the problem we were facing was local and the solution had to be local. After all, the problem lives locally, not nationwide. That seems common sense, but when you look around America, how many people have abandoned their community?

Parents surrendered their children to activist teachers. My parents never attended a school board meeting and woke up one day to find out that these elected officials care more about ideology than their teachers. Citizens voted for local politicians. Newspapers have been reduced and local news has become nationwide. And on.
That local flavour needs to come back. I think this is the missing part of this new American mission that has made Trump’s election possible. We have to do our part at a local level. We have to move outside our homes and interact with people in our community. We must leave the echo chamber and be entangled with the diversity of thoughts outside the door.
Above all, we must see ourselves as individuals. What are our individual talents? How can you make a local effect on the individual level? I knew this woman who went to my local library every Friday to read with local kids. For a year she read with one child. She shared a story of life. He shared him. She had never met any children from the project. He had never met anyone who survived the Holocaust.

The child went to college. She still goes to the library every Friday and has done so for over 30 years. What began as a small grew into an effort that influenced many people in the community. And it only took one individual.
What are you going to do for today’s community?
