Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said on Tuesday that a video showing Phelan’s slurred speech and trying to get to his feet went viral on social media, prompting many to suspect he was drunk. He called on Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan to resign.
In a statement, Paxton called on Phelan to resign after falling into a “clearly debilitating inebriation” on the floor of the Texas State Capitol.

In a statement, the Attorney General said his actions “will adversely affect the legislative process and fail to meet his obligations to the public.” “Texans rely on the House of Representatives to pass important conservative priorities, such as protecting the integrity of our elections and stopping Chinese spies from taking control of Texas lands,” Paxton said.

Paxton added that Phelan’s “failure as chairman” created a “crisis of confidence for all Republican candidates throughout the party.”
“I hope House Speaker Phelan gets the help he needs,” Paxton said, adding that he had proven himself “not worthy of the trust of the people of Texas and incapable of leading the Texas House of Representatives.” concluded the statement.
Paxton also issued a letter of inquiry to Rep. Andrew Marr, chairman of the Texas House General Investigative Ethics Committee, for possible “violations of House rules, state law, and conduct unbecoming of his position.” asked for an investigation.
Phelan’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment, but the office referred to the allegations in other reports.
