Petaling Jaya: Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), has made six oil and gas discoveries in five blocks off the coast of Sarawak.

The Gedongbak well in SK306, the Mirdanga well in SK411 (Balingjan), the Singhing well in SK313, the Machinchan and Pankin wells in SK301B, and the Karun Emas well in SK315 (West Luconia) are emerging from new and existing fields and exhibiting low levels of contaminants.

These discoveries were made against the backdrop of an intensive domestic exploration drilling campaign that began in late 2022. The campaign also led to Petronas Caligari’s discovery of Nahala-1 in Block SK306 in the same year, a significant oil discovery of the past decade.

“This series of discoveries clearly demonstrates that the Malaysian basin has untapped exploration potential, waiting to be discovered by companies looking to adopt new and innovative methods,” said Datuk Adif Zulkifri, Executive Vice President and Upstream CEO of Petronas.

“We hope that these will inspire more companies to join and invest in Malaysia’s upstream sector, especially in the exploration sector,” he added.

Mohd Rehani Abdul Rahman, Petronas Exploration Vice President, said: “These discoveries are the result of our exploration team’s willingness to challenge norms and challenge long-standing dogma.

Looking to the future, Petronas Caligari is determined to replicate the success of this approach in other exploration projects in Malaysia. With a focus on ensuring energy security while supporting the energy transition, the company aims to continue to leverage its expertise and technology to drive growth and innovation.
