More on-ramp closures are planned as part of the massive Kennedy Expressway construction project, according to the latest release from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The road closures come as Chicago drives ahead of the busy Thanksgiving holiday season, which typically sees increased traffic and congestion on the city’s freeways.

The next ramp closure is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. Nov. 13, according to IDOT. Both ramp closures “are expected to reopen within two weeks,” he said IDOT.

  • Upbound Kennedy to Division Street.
  • North Avenue (Illinois 64) towards Kennedy

According to IDOT, the following ramp closures are already in place:

  • Upbound line from Kennedy to Armitage Avenue scheduled to reopen the week of November 13th
  • Upbound line from Kennedy to North Avenue scheduled to reopen the week of November 20th
  • Armitage Avenue towards Kennedy scheduled to reopen the week of November 20th

The Inbound Kennedy project is expected to be completed in late fall 2023, with “all lanes and ramps reopening and express lanes resuming normal service,” IDOT officials said.

Construction on the express lanes is expected to begin in 2024, with construction on the downbound Kennedy scheduled to begin in 2025, officials said.

IDOT says motorists can expect lane changes, overnight lane closures and “significant delays” as part of the ongoing construction.
