Rumors that the MCU’s Fantastic Four is a 1960s superhero story have been going wild on social media, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed it’s true. During a recent appearance on The Official Marvel Podcast, Feige confirmed that the upcoming film will be a period piece set in New York City. But there’s a twist: it might not be the New York we know in this universe.

This revelation came to light when Feege began discussing a piece of art that had been shared on the Fantastic Four’s social media profiles, which shows Johnny Storm floating in the air with a glimpse of a cityscape in the corner of the image.

He said: “Another piece of art we released had Johnny Storm flying through the sky making the number four sign, and in the corner of the image there was a cityscape. A lot of clever people noticed that that cityscape wasn’t exactly like the New York we know or the New York of the ’60s that exists in our world. I think that’s a clever observation.”

While story details are still thin on the ground at this point, the four Marvel superheroes are already being joined by new faces: Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman/Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch/Johnny Storm, Pedro Pascal as the ever-popular Mister Fantastic Reed Richards, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, with Julia Garner, Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne and Ralph Ineson also reprising their roles as major characters.

The Fantastic Four is already set to begin production later this year, with filming reportedly set to begin after Comic-Con on July 29.

The Marvel movie’s release date is set for July 25, 2025.
