James Earl Jones, the legendary actor who voiced Darth Vader, has passed away at the age of 93.
“He passed away this morning at his home in Dutchess County, New York, surrounded by his family,” his representative confirmed in a statement.
Aside from his work in the Star Wars series, Jones is also known for voicing Mufasa in the 1994 film The Lion King and its 2019 live-action remake, as well as for his work on The Simpsons.
In terms of film, James is known for his work in many films, including Dr. Strangelove (1964), Conan the Barbarian (1982), The Return of Amadeus (1988), Field of Dreams (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), and The Sandlot (1990).
Jones was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in The Great White Hope (1970) and received an Honorary Award in 2012.
His television work has also been highly acclaimed, earning him eight Emmy nominations, including wins in 1991 for “Gabriel’s Fire” and “Heat Wave.”
James was also a Broadway star, receiving four Tony Award nominations and two wins for “The Great White Hope” (1969) and “Fences” (1987). The actor received a special Tony Award in 2017.
Other awards he has received include the Kennedy Center Honors in 2002, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2009, and the National Society of Film Critics Life Achievement Award in 1995.
His exceptional singing voice has earned him three Grammy nominations, including a 2001 win for Best Spoken Word for “A Christmas Miracle with Jonathan Toomey.”
Jones was a rare EGOT winner, having won two Emmy Awards, one Grammy Award, three Tony Awards and an honorary Academy Award.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecelia Hart, to whom he was married from 1982 to 2016. The couple had one son, Flynn Earl Jones.
James was married to Julianne Marie from 1968 to 1972.
