Here’s how you can stop mosquitoes before they bite

West Palm Beach, Florida — South Florida’s hot and humid summers are also mosquito season.

“I get bitten all the time,” said Kate Cooner of West Palm Beach.

There are many options for fighting back, she said.

There are various options to keep mosquitoes away.

“I recommend DEET to anyone looking to repel mosquitoes,” said Steve Fazekas, of the Palm Beach County Mosquito Control Department.

Many over-the-counter repellents contain DEET, which is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Other options include citronella candles and certain botanicals such as lemongrass, which is used as a mosquito repellent scent.

“Maybe a big fan works better than a citronella candle,” says Fazikas.

Another important thing is to empty out all the water that has accumulated around your home.

“I’ve seen literally thousands of larvae in a five-gallon bucket, and they’ll hatch and chase you every day,” says Fazikas.
