College food science graduate students swept both best presentation awards at the American Oil Chemistry Society Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado.

PhD student Arda Tuhanioglu won the general group category and MSc student Sumanjot Kaur won the protein and by-products group category. These were his only two contests held at the April meeting.

Both are Ali Ubeitglari, a food science student and assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering at the Dale Bumpers College of Agriculture, Food and Life Sciences. Both students help out in his food engineering lab for health. Uveitgarari is also a researcher and scientist at the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, a research arm of the University’s College of Systems Agriculture.

In addition to the Poster Award, Tuhanioglu was also awarded the Honor Student Award by AOCS.

Tuhanioglu’s presentation was “A Green Integrated Approach for Extracting High-Value Waxes and Bioactive Compounds from Sorghum Bran Via Supercritical Carbon Dioxide.” His research provides a new approach to extract both hydrophilic (such as phenolic compounds) and hydrophobic (such as waxes) from sorghum bran in a single step using green technology.

Kaur presented “Generation of Nanoporous Protein Aerogels from Defatted Rice Bran by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide”. Kaur’s research is developing high-value nanoporous materials from underutilized defatted rice bran. Her research could improve the use of rice processing byproducts in Arkansas because Arkansas is one of the nation’s top rice-producing states.

Tuhanioglu edged out two other University of Nebraska finalists. Kaul defeated finalists from the University of Nebraska, the University of Alberta, and Kansas State.
