Elizabeth Hurley has been raising money and raising awareness about breast cancer for nearly 30 years.
She just teamed up with the Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign to light up the Empire State Building pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Hurley also told “Extra” about her global mission, which was inspired by her grandmother, who was diagnosed in 1992.
Elizabeth said: “When my grandmother was diagnosed and undergoing treatment, and of course when she eventually passed away, we didn’t talk about it. There was no conversation about breast cancer back then.”
She continued, “All I know is that if I had been diagnosed today, everything would have been very different. Women are now being taught about the importance of early detection.”
The actress has taken steps to protect herself, saying, “I check myself every month. I watch my weight. I don’t smoke. I don’t drink too much alcohol. I’m trying to do that.”
Hurley said the disease continues to hit close to home after three of her friends were recently diagnosed.
“Three of my own close friends have been diagnosed with breast cancer this year, so we always recognize that despite the progress we’ve made, we still have a long way to go,” she said. Said.
She also has a new ally in her 22-year-old son Damian.
“He cares a lot,” Hurley said. “And it’s interesting because you can see that his generation is very different from my generation in that they grew up with knowledge of the Pink Ribbon.”
She added: “More young women are being diagnosed with breast cancer. And there’s still so much to talk about and so much to accomplish.”
