With Deadpool & Wolverine expected to be a huge box office success ahead of its release on July 26, that film’s director, Shawn Levy, is the perfect choice to direct a new Marvel Studios film. Though he’s currently busy with Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel has eyed him to direct another blockbuster.
While the film is still in its very early stages, sources say Levi is considering the offer and the studio handed him the film’s script last week. However, Marvel Studios is also considering other options, considering Levi previously turned down the offer. He was reportedly offered the role in mid-March, but didn’t agree due to scheduling conflicts.
Aside from Deadpool and Wolverine, he also directs and executive produces the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. This suggests Levy’s schedule will be packed through next year. Initially, this schedule did not line up with Marvel’s plans for Avengers 5, but reports have suggested the studio has postponed the film. This gives Levy another chance to direct the MCU’s highly anticipated film.
Meanwhile, the fact that Marvel approached him again shows how eager they are to work with him again, considering Deadpool and Wolverine are major milestones for both of them.
The latest script is being written by Loki creator Michael Waldron. Initially, the film was called Avengers: Kang Dynasty, but that all changed when Jonathan Majors, who was set to star as Kang the Conqueror, was convicted of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton was originally set to direct, but parted ways with Marvel Studios in November 2023. The currently untitled film is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026.
