For years, we’ve analyzed the playing style and schemes of Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. This comes as no surprise, as Mayfield is a former No. 1 overall pick who had a stellar college football career at the University of Oklahoma. Baker Mayfield is constantly ranked and compared to his peers at the position, but we don’t often hear current college quarterback prospects compared to Mayfield’s game.
That was until NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah compared him to a quarterback who will be entering the draft after this season — a player who, ironically, comes from a school that Baker Mayfield absolutely despises.
in Recently published articles, Jeremiah wrote a scouting report on Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who is entering his third season as a starter for the Longhorns. In discussing who Ewers resembles in the NFL as a quarterback, he said the ideal matchup would be Mayfield, a former Sooner. Here’s what he had to say about him:
Quinn Ewers and Baker Mayfield in a relationship
“After studying the three games, I couldn’t think of a perfect fit for Ewers. The first name that came to mind was Kevin Kolb, who reminded me of my younger days as a scout. Ewers’ form and style of play reminded me of this old school player. However, the more I watched game tape, the more I thought of Baker Mayfield. Both of them are quick with everything they do, seeing the field, setting up in the pocket and throwing the ball.
“Both players have the spunk and playmaking skills to shape a team. Mayfield has really blossomed in Tampa Bay after bouncing around the league the past few years. I don’t think Ewers is as polished as Mayfield was in his collegiate years, but I see similar potential and promise.”
It’s a bit amusing that these two quarterbacks are rivals. Texas and Oklahoma meet annually in the Red River Rivalry, one of the most highly-anticipated and coveted rivalry games in college football. The game usually takes place during the first or second week of October at a neutral site in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
Baker Mayfield is 2-1 in those games. Ewers is 1-1 but has a chance to break the tie this season. In all three games Mayfield has played, the final score was seven points or less. Ewers and the Longhorns dominated the Sooners, 49-0, and had a classic game last season, with Oklahoma scoring a late touchdown to win 34-30.
QB finishing off a great season
Both quarterbacks enjoyed great success last season. Ewers passed for 3,479 yards and 22 touchdown passes to lead the Longhorns to the College Football Playoffs, where they lost to Washington in the semifinals. Ewers broke the Big 12 Championship single-game record with 452 passing yards while throwing four touchdown passes as Texas defeated Oklahoma State 49-21 to win the Big 12 Championship. Ewers was named MVP of that game and made big money this offseason as one of three players featured on the cover of the EA Sports College Football 25 video game, which is coming out next week.
Buccaneers fans: Baker Mayfield He moved to Tampa Bay and his career was resurrected. Mayfield threw for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns as the Bucs won the NFC South, defeating the Eagles in the first round but losing a very close game to the Lions in the divisional round. Mayfield was selected to the Pro Bowl and won MVP. He had a busy offseason, signing a three-year, $100 million contract with the Bucs and becoming a new father in April.
Depending on where Ewers ends up being drafted, we could see the two quarterbacks face off in a game sometime next season or beyond.
