The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly investigating potential trade in Denver Nuggets’ Sharpshooter Michael Porter Jr. to bolster external shooting. But getting him will come at a sudden price. They’ll probably send Austin Reeves to Colorado.
With Luka Doncic and LeBron James leading the offense, the Lakers remained inconsistent beyond the arc, shooting just 35.7% from 3-point range under manager JJ Reddick. Despite a strong push against the second seed at the Western Conference, the recent three-game losing streak highlights boundary struggles.
Michael Porter JR: A lack of LA work?
Porter Jr., one of the league’s top shooters, averages 18.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 50.6% off the field and 39.9% off the 3-point range this season. Since his rookie year, he has consistently filmed more than 39.7% from the depths of four of the past five seasons.
His quick release and off-ball movement instantly boost the Lakers’ offense, extending defenses on the other side and creating an open look for the superstar. By contrast, Reaves is a valuable playmaker, but he lacks the elite three-point shooting that the Lakers desperately need.
Nuggets is reluctant to move Porter Jr.
Despite trade speculation, Nuggets are likely to break up with Porter Jr. easily. The 2023 NBA champions value his contributions, and Denver is adamant about keeping him up unless the blockbuster deal forces his hands. Porter himself dismissed trade negotiations as “just a noise.”
However, Denver faces financial constraints and navigates the luxury tax while trying to maintain a competitive roster. If they lack the playoffs, they may rethink their attitude towards trading Porters for depth and future assets.
Lakers monitor the situation
As the playoffs approach, the Lakers will focus on Porter Jr.’s availability. If the Nuggets showed their willingness to negotiate, Los Angeles could push hard to land one of the league’s best Sharpshooters.
Adding Porter not only improves your 3-point shooting, but also provides the missing pieces you need for a legitimate championship run.
