The British Open is halfway through, with Shane Lowry in sole possession of the lead.
Lawry shot a 69 in the second round on Friday to drop to seven under par and take a two-stroke lead heading into Moving Day at Royal Troon in Scotland, where he had a slight advantage again in the second round after strong winds pounded the afternoon waves and caused early exits for several big names.
Daniel Brown, who led after the first round, shot a 1-over 72 on Friday. He starts Saturday at 5-under par, along with Justin Rose, who tied for the lowest score of the day with a 3-under 68 on Friday. They are the first British and Irish trio to lead halfway through the British Open since 1951.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will start the day at 2 under par, five strokes behind Lawrie. Scheffler has already won six PGA Tour events this season, including a playoff victory at the Travelers Championship.

The weather was poor on Friday afternoon but several golfers made the most of a brief improvement in the weather at Royal Troon on Saturday morning.
Then it started raining again.
Lawrie extends lead to three
Shane Lowry extended his lead with his first birdie of the day on the par-5 fourth hole. He was already three strokes ahead as the rain began to fall heavily at Royal Troon.
Brown recovers from early bogey
Daniel Brown bounced back after a poor tee shot led to a bogey on the first hole, but a birdie on the third hole put him back at 5 under for the tournament and in sole second place. Now more than two rounds into his major championship debut, Brown doesn’t seem shaken.
Russell Henley’s quality third round continues
Henry is in second place at 6 under after 12 holes. His approach play is great. Not everyone can hit irons like that on the first cut, but putting? Gimme that in the weekend four-ball.
Justin Thomas will play in the tournament Sunday.
Thomas entered the third round on Saturday with a 4-under 67. He got off to a blistering start with six birdies in the first 12 holes. After bogeying the 13th and 15th holes, he settled in and finished with three straight pars. He is seven strokes behind leader Shane Lowry going into the final round.
Xander Schauffele gets going early Saturday
As the rain started to fall, the Wild Boar numbers turned red, with Xander Schauffele at 2 under for the day and 3 under for the win.
Shane Lowry lands his tee shot in a bunker on the first hole
Rain continued to fall all day, but the leaders hit their first tee shots with Shane Lowry topping the leaderboard at seven under par. Lawry also found himself caught in a left hand fairway bunker on his first tee shot. Lawry is looking to win his second Claret Jug.
Russell Henry and SAUCE
Skip, skip, stop, zip. This is exactly what Russell Henley described at the Postage Stamp. He made par to come out in 32. Henley is two under for the tournament and four under at the turn of the day. You’ll also notice that the rain is starting to come down in earnest, changing the conditions for the players at Royal Troon.
Scottie Scheffler tees off in round three
Scheffler, a two-time Masters winner, is currently in the rounds at the British Open. He is two under par going into the third round, five strokes behind Shane Lowry. Scheffler, who will play today with LIV Golf’s Dean Burmester, has six wins in 15 starts this season.
Justin Thomas fades after strong start
Justin Thomas is feeling a bit more settled after finishing with a 31. Seven birdies in the first 12 holes put him close to the lead going into the next 30 minutes or so of the round, but bogeys on the 13th and 15th holes and a missed second shot on the 16th hole have Thomas desperate to close the gap on the leader as the third round draws to a close.
9. Thriston Lawrence’s star turn continues inward
Lawrence was seven under for the day and four under for the tournament, just three strokes behind Shane Lowry. Rain was starting to fall at Royal Troon, bringing umbrellas among fans and potentially affecting players as the final group tees off.
Great golf from Thriston Lawrence. He finished 7th out of 11 at Royal Troon and is quickly becoming a strong contender for the British Open! 🔥🇿🇦 pic.twitter.com/tfbUR679qa
The LSU Tiger birdied the 8th hole to improve his score to 4 under for the day and 1 under for the championship. Scoring conditions were very good for the first half of the day, but rain is starting to fall in the Royal Troon area.
Sometimes you have to turn the club around and create something.
Robert McIntyre is a left-hander, but opted to turn his club over and hit right-handed to make it nearly impossible to get out of a bunker late in the third round. He ended up hitting the ball far to the right, but made par from the position.
JT gets another birdie
The two-time PGA Champion made another birdie on the 12th hole to move to two under par and finish six under par for the day. The 2022 PGA Championship will be his final win on tour, and his best finish at the British Open was a tie for 11th in 2019.
Kim Si-woo gets a hole-in-one on the 17th hole
This is the 10th British Open at Royal Troon, but to date no player has ever ace the par-3 17th hole. But Kim Si Woo’s hole-in-one in the third round went from zero to one. Kim hit the shot of a lifetime to save five strokes on the tournament and make par for the hole-in-one on the day. Take a look.
DP World Tour star Thriston Lawrence is also working his way up the leaderboard.
Among the players posting lower scores early on in the day were some familiar faces we’ve seen in Sunday’s majors before, like Adam Scott and Justin Thomas, but also some lesser known names like Thriston Lawrence, a four-time DP World Tour winner from South Africa who was six under par after the first eight holes and had climbed to 24th on the leaderboard, good for fourth place.
Adam Scott Jumps to the Top of the Leaderboard
Adam Scott has moved up 41 places on the leaderboard today after 16 holes and is tied for 13th with a great round of 5 under par.
