The arrest of the anonymous Mexican man was announced by El Centro District Chief Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino.

So far, more than 8,700 non-citizen criminals have been arrested this fiscal year, compared to more than 15,000 in fiscal 2023 and more than 12,000 in fiscal 2022. This year, that number included 119 sex offenders. Some law enforcement agencies and lawmakers are worried that the continuing crisis at the southern border may be leading to more criminals trying to sneak past Border Patrol agents in an attempt to “run away.” Concerns continue.
Meanwhile, the number of border encounters in March was 189,372, slightly down from the same period last year.
While March was the lowest number of encounters under the Biden administration, the first half of fiscal 2024 had a record of 1,340,801 encounters, compared to the first half of fiscal 2023, which set a record of 1,226,254 total encounters, according to CBP records. exceeded.

“CBP is working with partners across the federal government and with foreign partners to take critical action to disrupt criminal networks during an unprecedented hemispheric migration campaign,” Troy Miller, acting CBP director, said in a statement. “We continue to take these measures,” he said. “Although encounter rates at our southern border are currently decreasing, we continue to prepare for change and continually manage operations to respond to ever-changing cross-border criminal activity and migration patterns. .”
Republicans, meanwhile, say the Biden administration is to blame for the crisis. This week, House Republicans will introduce articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate – U.S. Customs and Border Protection is DHS’s law enforcement arm.
