Singer Anitta has tried her hand at everything from music to fashion to soccer.
Extra’s Mona Kosar Abdi spoke with Anitta at an exclusive event in New York City where she unveiled the new evoluSHEIN x Anitta collection, her third collaboration with the brand.
Anitta has sold over 10 million records and become an international superstar.
Anitta admitted she feels “a certain amount” of pressure being the face of the country, saying, “You don’t see a lot in my country when someone comes out of Brazil and has an international career. In Brazil, you’re expected to represent the country. You can’t please 100 percent of the people, but I think you can please a lot of people.”
Anitta recently performed at the first-ever NFL game in Brazil, to the delight of millions of American football fans.
“This is a big thing. Everybody is looking forward to the season starting,” she said.
Leading up to her performance, Anitta learned all about the Eagles, Packers and the game itself.
She said, “There’s someone to receive the ball, there’s someone to throw the ball. There’s one person to receive it, and one other person. We know that.”
Anitta is now gearing up to take on New York City, where she’ll perform her new song “Paradise” onstage at the VMAs alongside Fat Joe and DJ Khaled.
“I’ll be singing that, and then I’ll be singing another song featuring a really cool artist from Argentina. It’s a little surprise, and at the end, of course, a little bit from my album ‘Funk Generation’,” she said.
She added: “We’ve been nominated, but whatever happens, we’re happy to celebrate.”
Anitta has also been a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world, unveiling her new evoluSHEIN x Anitta collection, which features 75 pieces including skirts, dresses, pants and tops that “have a little bit of everything.”
She emphasized that “this collection is very important in terms of using different fabrics and the idea of sustainability and fabrics that don’t have as negative an impact on the environment. This is a theme that I really care about because in Brazil we have a lot of nature.”
She explained that she brought together designers from different backgrounds to create the collection: “I like the idea of showcasing different people and their cultures,” she said. “I think it’s also informative. People can learn from what you’re wearing.”
Body inclusivity is also important to Anitta. “I include dancers and people of all body types in my music videos and on stage,” she says. “I want to feature all the different types of beautiful women that we should celebrate and that I want to celebrate, and I think there are a lot of them at SHEIN. My collection has different sizes, different shapes, different styles.”
Although Anitta is now a global pop star, her success didn’t come overnight: she emphasizes, “If you really want something and you love it, you have to work for it, and I do. I’m very happy with what’s happening with my career.”
