Agent Movie Review: This movie sits somewhere between the larger-than-life Surender Reddy presentation and the Akhil Akkineni movie, but it doesn’t belong on either end of the spectrum.
After the massive period film Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019), director Surender Reddy took on the task of giving Akhil Akkineni a massive makeover in Agent. Akhil’s last outing was Bhaskar’s Most Eligible Bachelor, which was just average.Surender Reddy continues her relationship with writer Vakkantham Vamshi on this project as well. Together they gave hits like Oosaravelli, Race Gurram and Kick 2.

like any other action movie, agent It has a storyline that is too thin. This is the story of a man called Ramakrishna/Rikki/Wild Saala (Akhil Akkineni) whose only goal in life is to become his RAW agent. He has spent his entire life for this sole ambition, but has been rejected numerous times by his agency. Mahadev is currently fighting a group called Syndicate, led by Dharma/God (Dino Morea), and Home Minister Jaya Shankar is a key member of the gang. They are trying to activate a “supercell” and Mahadev is doing everything he can to stop them. We don’t know what these supercells mean or how dangerous they are.
Mahadev and Dharma used to be his best agents, so there is a past connection. Dharma worked only for Mahadev’s rating and being accepted by all as the greatest agent of all time. How Dharma became the bad guy, why Ricky was rejected by his RAW, and the role he played in the battle between Mahadev and Dharma form the rest of the film.
Comparisons to the recent spy movie Pathaan are inevitable. Agent also tries to capture all the elements of an international spy adventure, but fails in some ways. Slender His Lady Director is known for his stylish and emotional action-adventure. The emotional connection is lacking here, too weak and too late when it emerges. Akhil’s natural charm is downplayed here, as the makers stick to the brawny, rogue-slapping template required of an action hero. Even the romance angle is cut short in favor of action. The romantic interest played by Sakshi Vaidya barely leaves enough space to connect with the audience. The second half, which provides some explanation for the protagonist’s “wild Saara” identity, holds the most-needed pointers until it’s too late.
Akhil has put a lot of work into this action avatar and it shows. Mammotti looks the part of RAW Chief and Dino rightfully fills the role of the villain. I would love to see him in more Southern movies. Debutante Sakshi Vaidya has parts of her charm and little else.
Rasool Ellore’s camera is impressive. HipHop Tamizha’s songs are passable, but the background score is partly impressive. Vakkantham Vamshi’s story follows and sticks to the typical action movie pattern. Somewhere between a giant Surender Reddy movie and an Akhil Akkineni movie, Agent truly gets bogged down in either zone and ends up being an average action movie.
