A 45-year-old Irish tourist died after falling from a moving train in Thailand on Tuesday, Thai police said.
Patrick Ward fell from a train traveling slowly through scenic landscapes in Kanchanburi province, west of the capital Bangkok, according to Pol of Sai Yok district. Major Kiatisak Kerchok.
Kiatisak said Ward may have fallen while walking between the carriages. He said it was unclear if Ward was looking at the scenery or taking pictures.
Police were immediately alerted to the incident, and medical personnel rushed to help Ward, but were unable to resuscitate him, Kiatisak said.
Ward boarded the train from Kanchanaburi’s River Kwai Station, known for natural attractions such as the Krasae caves near the scene of the crime.
Many visitors are also drawn to the railroad history, made famous by the 1957 World War II film The Bridge over the River Kwai. A railway route built by prisoners of war once connected Thailand with neighboring Myanmar.
Ward entered Thailand on December 26 on a tourist visa, officials said. A police investigation is ongoing.
