One of the largest islands in the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is definitely a popular island to visit when exploring the archipelago. Honestly, it’s made even better by the best things to do in Lanzarote, which are scattered all over the island.
Additionally, it is right next to other beautiful islands such as Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura.
Now a fairly popular destination, Lanzarote is often thought of as a well-trodden destination. However, like anywhere else, it’s popular for a reason. Additionally, it is very well connected to the rest of Spain and Europe. All this makes this island very easy to visit and explore.
Now, I don’t really care what kind of vacation you guys are enjoying. And I sometimes feel like the Canary Islands get a bad rap for being too “touristy” or having too many visitors. Let’s be honest, you don’t have to fall off the edge of the world to enjoy amazing places. I really think Lanzarote has so much beauty that it shouldn’t be ignored.
Anyway, I’ll ramble on about my thoughts again! What I really wanted to do is share with you all the best things to do in Lanzarote on your next trip and hope you like it. Have the best time on the island!
1.) Los Ajaches
Located in the south-west of the island, Los Ajaches is easily one of the best things to do in Lanzarote if you like getting out of town.
As you know, Los Ajaches is all about nature, and this protected area of the island is a completely unique and wonderful place to explore.
This is especially true as it is home to some of the oldest volcanic structures on the island, as well as some impressive hiking routes through the volcanoes and arid region.
Hiking routes in the area can take several hours to walk, so be sure to bring comfortable shoes and plenty of sunscreen.
If hiking isn’t your thing, you can easily drive to El Chiringuito restaurant, which has off-street parking. From here you can stop at Playa de Papagayo, Caleta del Conger, and Playa de la Sera.
These are gorgeous beaches that are much less crowded than some of the beaches within the resort.

2.) Timanfaya National Park
Probably one of the best things to do on Lanzarote, Timanfaya National Park is a must-see when you’re on the island, especially if you love dramatic landscapes.
As you know, the entire national park is made up of volcanic soil, creating a very unique landscape. Honestly, it feels like another planet.
Nowadays, you can rent a car or, if you prefer, take a tour bus to the national park itself. I always prefer to go out by car because now I can stay as long (or as short) as I want.
That being said, if you don’t want to drive, there are quite a few organized tours available. This is especially true since they get priority entry into the park itself (and don’t have to wait in line). However, if you get car (or bus) sickness easily, prepare in advance. The road is quite winding.
Oh, and be sure to find people cooking in open wells. The heat emanating from the ground is so hot that it can actually cook food.
3.) Jameos del Agua
Just “up the road” from Cueva de los Verdes, Jameos del Agua is part of a volcanic cave system that makes a very spectacular venue for shows and performances.
You can now visit during the day for around 10 euros a time, but the real draw of this place is when there’s a live performance.
Before heading to Lanzarote, check out the following: their show I would like to make plans to visit this part of Lanzarote on this day. Probably one of the most unique music venues in Lanzarote.

4.) Arrecife
Exploring Arrecife, one of the oldest cities, is one of the best things to do in Lanzarote if you’re interested in history. As you know, Arrecife’s old town dates back to his 1600s and is absolutely gorgeous to wander around, especially the iconic San Gines and its stunning ceilings.
Afterwards, take a stroll around San Gabriel Castle and the city’s port area.
There are many small bars and restaurants here, perfect for relaxing by the waterfront.
And if you’re hungry, head to El Nido for delicious seafood.
5.) La Geria
La Geria, informally known as the Wine Valley of Lanzarote, is a region with some of Spain’s most unique vineyards. As you can see, a small wall is built around each vine to protect it from dry conditions and strong winds.
To this day, the area is home to well over 10,000 vines, which is pretty impressive to see.
Most of the wine varieties here use the malvasia grape, which typically has a sweeter taste than some of the drier grapes. Honestly, it’s well worth a visit for the experience, regardless of your preference for sweet or dry wines.
There are several important wineries to visit in La Geria, and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Examples include Bodega La Geria, Bodegas Rubicon, and El Chupadero (my favorite for its rustic feel).
6.) Cueva de los Verdes
This ancient lava tube is probably one of the most unique attractions in Lanzarote, especially since you can go inside the lava tube itself.
In fact, local people have been using this cave system for hundreds of years, often hiding inside the caves to escape from landing pirates.
Nowadays, you don’t have to worry about pirates, but you can dive into amazing caves. Moreover, Jameos del He is also not far from Agua.
7.) La Graciosa Island
Located off the north coast of Lanzarote, La Graciosa is a perfect excursion to one of the much smaller Canary Islands that make up the archipelago.
When you arrive here, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to a pristine island with no paved roads. It is absolutely picturesque and has some wonderful beaches.
There are now ferries leaving from the port of Orzola every 30 minutes, so it’s easy to get there if you’re looking for something a little different. That said, you can also go on a sea tour that stops at the many coves of La Graciosa.
8.) Arietta
Located on Lanzarote’s north coast, the quaint coastal spot of Arrieta is an easy stop while driving around the island. Yes, it may be a tiny little place, but it’s absolutely gorgeous for an hour before heading further south.
When you’re here, be sure to visit Casa Juanita (Blue House) and don’t forget to stop by Restaurante La Nasa and try their homemade paella. Honestly, it’s very delicious.
As I mentioned, Arrieta is very easy to visit while in the area and is a great stop when touring the island.

9.) Caleta de Famara
Located on the northwest coast of Lanzarote, Caleta de Famara is the perfect place to visit if you love surfing. The beaches here are generally large and expansive, with some of the best wave conditions on the island.
That said, the beach itself isn’t just for surfers, and you can easily spend a chilly day relaxing on the relatively quiet beach.
Honestly, heading to Caleta de Famara is one of the best things to do in Lanzarote for a relaxing day.
Yes, it’s in a more remote part of Lanzarote, but it’s worth a visit if you want to avoid the high season crowds. Bring lots of books, sunscreen, and snacks.
10.) El Lago Verde
El Lago Verde (or Green Lake) is part of Lanzarote’s volcanic formation and is easy to visit if you’re in the south-west of the island.
Well, you can usually park pretty close to the lake and walk down to see this unique part of the island. Honestly, the views are stunning and well worth the short walk along the rugged coastline.
Then stop in El Golfo and visit Casa Rafa for some of the best seafood on the West Coast. You may have to wait for a table during high season, so plan ahead.
