What role do tools like ChatGPT play in our personal and professional lives?
At Axios’ recent AI+ Summit, Eric Schmidt (former Google CEO and founder of Schmidt Futures) stood by his previous statements characterizing AI as an untrustworthy partner.
Schmidt is right that tools like ChatGPT have flaws, such as a tendency to hallucinate, but wrong that it is a poor companion. In fact, it is because of these deficiencies that we find that partnership is necessary. The human role is to take the useful but flawed product that ChatGPT produces and improve it.
ChatGPT is a logic and creativity generator, making it the perfect partner for creative problem solving. The ability to respond to questions and comments gives users from all walks of life access to information they never had before. Whether you’re looking for a creative perspective to analyze a problem or need some Christmas gift inspiration.

The benefits of this partnership are especially evident in the workplace. As a result, we found that people using the assistant were more productive, and ChatGPT enabled even historically poor performers to become more effective contributors.
Additionally, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published an editorial examining how LLM (including ChatGPT) can be used to improve nursing care. In the nursing industry, LLMs do what they do best: analyze, evaluate, and interpret patient data to reduce the workload of nurses. This expansion will allow nurses to provide more personalized emotional support to patients. This is something you cannot do with ChatGPT.

But a recent poll conducted by my organization, Utah State University’s Center for Growth and Opportunity, shows that Americans are most concerned about AI contributing to job losses. According to an MIT study, a majority of companies say they are not implementing new technologies quickly enough.
While it’s clear that leveraging ChatGPT as a tool is effective, it’s no surprise that some people find it difficult to learn and adopt new technology quickly. Americans who are unsure about the future of AI in the workplace may not yet understand how to build a partnership with ChatGPT to enhance their skills and capabilities.
