When we were kids, our parents always advised us to never accept candy from strangers! That warning remained with us all year long, except for one sunny day at the end of October when all caution was thrown to the wind and everyone dressed up in costumes and begging for sweets from strangers. I knocked on the door.
Americans love Halloween, and Americans also love Halloween candy. It doesn’t matter that you have the freedom to act like a child for a day, or that the candy tastes better if you get it from someone else than if you pay for it yourself. Americans are expected to spend $3.6 billion on Halloween candy this year, driven in part by a reported 13% increase in candy prices this year due to inflation.
So, in this extravagant candy extravaganza, what is the best Halloween candy of all time?

Chocolate, chewy caramel, and tiny rice crisps create a deliciously underrated bite. This is probably because the name was changed from the then-current “100,000 Dollar Bar,” or perhaps because there aren’t commercials to support it like there used to be, and it doesn’t make the top lists as often. , absolutely worth it.

Swedish red fish: I’ll forgive the Swedish fish for having another country in its name, but I’ll congratulate the manufacturers for realizing that other flavors were inferior and starting packaging only red fish together. These candies are so good that they are popular just for their red flavor. It’s like no other flavor I’ve ever tasted, be it cherry, strawberry, or raspberry.
It’s very “red”, especially the color unique to this candy, and it’s delicious. Rumor has it that this flavor was originally based on a fruit called lingonberry, but it’s actually just a special flavor in its own right. With its unique flavor packed with great chewing power that is sure to tear out stuck crowns and fillings in your teeth, Swedish redfish ranks as a top candy choice in many states across the country.
Sour Patch Kids: If you like the idea of sweet gummies, but also like torturing yourself first, you’ll love picking up a packet of Sour Patch Kids in your Halloween loot. Things are more appreciated when they work for you, so getting a sweet gummy inside after exploding with a sour pucker makes these a consistent favorite with the Halloween crowd.
Interestingly, Sour Patch Kids was originally sold under a different name, “Mars Men,” in the 1970s. They underwent a rebrand and emerged as Sour Patch Kids, riding on the Cabbage Patch Kids craze in the mid-1980s, and that’s when they really took off.
Twizzler: This delicious red licorice is often associated with going to the movies, but Twizzlers are also a staple in Halloween assortments. There’s a good reason for that. It has a unique chewy texture and rich faux strawberry flavor, making it very satisfying.

Some people on the West Coast might try to blurt out “Red Vines!” Alternately, since I’m from the Midwest and am an authority here, I’ll cross it out and note that Red Vine has a bit of a soapy aftertaste. This is why Twizzlers (and no other red licorice brand) are on the nation’s top candy lists.
It is also very important that you do not attempt to fraudulently purchase any brand of black licorice. Almost half of Americans don’t like black licorice, and the number is even higher among young people, so keep eating your Strawberry Twizzlers.

Of course, if you’re deciding what to give out to your neighbors and inflation hasn’t made it impossible, you can be a hero by buying a full-sized candy bar. But other than the awful peanut-flavored toffee-like stuff that comes in orange and black wax packaging, it’s mostly safe.

If it were my personal list, I’d probably put York Peppermint Patty, Junior Mint, and the somewhat controversial Mounds Bar in there. But if you stick to the list, it’ll probably be considered more of a treat shop than a trick shop. .
