Rentals or hotels: Which is cheaper?
Which one?The UK-based Consumer Research Group compared the average prices of: thousands of 300,000 hotels listed on Airbnb and Vrbo. They also surveyed 50 locations over a one-year period to monitor price trends.
What did they discover? On average, you get cheaper hotel rates 75% of the time.

Now, when you need a big kitchen or want to get the whole gang together in one place, hotels aren’t always the best choice. But at least it’s worth checking out. It’s time to put hotels back on your radar.
Oh, the places you go!
So why have Airbnb and Vrbo prices increased? Several major U.S. cities have tightened restrictions on Airbnb rentals, making it more difficult for property owners to make a profit. Raising rates allows these owners to continue living.
This isn’t just the US. The biggest price difference is in Greece. In Santorini, renting a one-bedroom through a site like Airbnb costs approximately. $104 More expensive than a hotel room.
The same is true for rentals in other major cities around the world when compared to hotel rooms.
- Amsterdam – $83 more expensive
- Singapore and London – $75 more
- dubai – $70 more expensive
- San Francisco – $44 more expensive

Calling all the cheapskates
I always look for ways to save money when I travel because I hate paying full price. Follow these tips to secure your hotel room at the best possible price.
- Go to last minute: If possible, wait until the day you need a hotel room to book. After 4 p.m., hotels know they are less likely to sell a room. On average, same-day prices are at least 10% cheaper.
- Just ask: Be sure to ask if there is a free room upgrade or breakfast. If you’re staying for more than a few days, give the check-in agent any tips for finding a better room.
- Direct is best: Research several travel sites to find the cheapest rate, then call the hotel and ask if they can offer you the same rate. You can also ask, “What are the most requested rooms from repeat customers?” Please avoid noisy rooms and wall views.
- Don’t forget the benefits: Join a hotel chain’s loyalty program for perks and discounts, or see if other memberships like AAA offer discounts.
- Free stays and upgrades: When you use a hotel-affiliated credit card, you can earn points that can be redeemed for stays. If you’re using your debit card for things like gas and groceries, you’re missing out.

PSA: Always check your camera
That’s not paranoia, it’s wisdom. This happens often. When you check into your rental or hotel room and lie on your bed, you see strange little lights flashing. Is it a camera? CO2 monitor? Recording device? No wonder. I’ll find it!
Large cameras are easy to spot, but anyone can easily hide a small camera behind furniture, vents, and decorations. An easy way to spot most types of cameras is to look for reflections in the lens.
- Turn off the lights and slowly scan the room with a flashlight or laser pointer, looking for bright reflections.
- Scan the room from multiple locations so you don’t miss any cameras that are aimed only at a specific location.
- Inspect vents, holes and gaps in walls and ceilings.
RF detectors are also available. This gadget can detect invisible wireless cameras. Unfortunately, RF detectors are not suitable for wired or recording-only cameras. In these cases, lens reflection methods should be used.
Rental includes free programs such as: wireless network watcher indicates which gadgets are connected to your wireless network. Then you might be able to find the connected camera. Do this at every rental property you stay in to double-check what’s connected to your network.
