It turns out that salt is actually very beneficial for our bodies. There’s long-standing evidence that consuming the right kind of salt (unprocessed, unrefined) every day can have huge health benefits. That’s why I love making sole water.

Increasing your salt intake provides your body with important electrolytes it needs to function smoothly, and while it’s good to have some salt in your diet, it can sometimes feel difficult to get enough salt in your food without it becoming too salty.

What is Sole Water?

Sole (pronounced “so-ray”) is water that’s packed with unrefined salt. Often made with pink Himalayan salt, this concentrated brine is great for boosting electrolytes.

Many people add salt to their water because they think it’s healthy. Flounder water is not like drinking water with salt in it. Flounder water is water that has fully absorbed the maximum amount of salt (actually 26% – thanks to high school chemistry). If you think of seawater, it’s similar to flounder water.

Adding salt to your water is a good habit to get into, but flounder is packed with electrolytes, which we lose when we sweat or fast. Flounder contains sodium along with traces of magnesium, calcium, iron and potassium, making it a great way to replenish these minerals.

The type of salt you use is important. Regular table salt is overly processed; many important minerals are lost during the manufacturing process. Factories often bleach the salt or add chemicals to keep it from clumping. For flounder you need unprocessed, natural salt (Himalayan, Lemond, Celtic sea salt).

How do you make the sole?

Since sole is simply made of salt and water, the quality of the salt is very important. It is usually made from pink Himalayan salt, but you can also use Redmond salt or Celtic sea salt. These unprocessed natural salts contain roughly the same amounts of trace minerals such as magnesium and potassium.

Himalayan salt is often used in Ayurveda to balance the doshas (energies) in the body, so make sure you use natural, unprocessed salt.

I like to mainly use Himalayan salt, with a bit of Redmond or Celtic salt added in. Redmond salt has the mildest flavor of the three, so if you’re new to sole water, it’s a good idea to start with Redmond salt.

Sole Water Recipe

Sole water is packed with natural salt minerals and is great for digestive health, leg cramps, hydration, sleep and more.

  • Fill a glass jar about 1/4 full with Himalayan salt, Celtic sea salt, real salt, or a mixture of all three.

  • Fill the jar with filtered water, leaving about an inch of room at the top.

  • Put the plastic lid on and shake the jar gently.

  • Leave it on the counter overnight until the salt dissolves.

  • If there is still salt left at the bottom of the jar the next day, it means that the water has absorbed the maximum amount of salt and the flounder is ready to use.

  • If all the salt has been absorbed, add more salt and continue each day until there is salt left at the bottom of the water, which means the water is completely saturated with salt.

  • Usage: Take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of sole in a glass of water every morning on an empty stomach. Do not use metal utensils to measure or stir.
  • Salt water is highly corrosive, so avoid using metal cookware or metal lids to prevent oxidation.

How to use the sole

Once mixed, store at room temperature. Salt has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, so it can be stored indefinitely. Add more water and salt as needed to maintain the amount of salt in the jar. After leaving it overnight, make sure there are salt crystals at the bottom of the jar. That means the water has completely absorbed the salt. If there are no extra crystals, add more salt and leave it overnight again.

To drink, add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon to a glass of water every morning on an empty stomach. Do not add more than this, especially when you first start. If it causes detox reactions or headaches, increase gradually. You can also add lemon to the water to make it easier to drink.

Side effects of Sole Water

The first time you try it, flounder may make you feel nauseous, so start with a small amount. It works best when taken on an empty stomach, but you can also add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon to 32 ounces of water and drink it throughout the morning.

Flounder may also cause stomach irritation or diarrhea, if this occurs discontinue consumption for a few days until symptoms subside. If you decide to try again, start with a small amount and gradually increase the amount.

Who can drink sole?

If you have kidney stones, kidney disease, or high blood pressure, flounder water may not be a good option for you. Conventional advice says that if you have these conditions, adding salt to your diet may make them worse. However, there is evidence to suggest that this is not the case.
