What Can Wells Fargo Do When You Fall For a Bank Scam?

A woman is distraught after losing $25,000 in hard-earned small business funds to a scam that claimed to be stopping wire transfers but was actually enabling them. Dealing with Wells Fargo to recover her funds only added to her frustration and pain.

The story comes from creator Taylor (@fitnfoodwithtaylor), who shared her story on TikTok on April 20th and has since racked up more than 574,000 views. In it, she explains how her nightmare scenario began when she received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Wells Fargo.

“I actually got a call on my cell phone with an 800 number from Wells Fargo,” she begins. “The person was a scammer pretending to be from Wells Fargo. I called them and they said someone in San Antonio, Texas had my driver’s license and debit card with my name on it. , I was told that I was trying to get into a branch in San Antonio for a direct wire transfer.

After confirming that she was not in San Antonio, the scammer put her on hold, called her again, and said he had gone to another branch in San Antonio to try another wire transfer. “While we were on the phone together, he successfully accessed my Wells Fargo banking app and caused me to perform what I believe was a cancellation of a wire transfer. [but] I was actually making a wire transfer. I was obviously in a very vulnerable state and at that point I had never made a wire transfer in my life. ”

To reassure her, the person even told Taylor that thanks to their cooperation, someone in San Antonio was arrested.

But after this episode, Taylor said: So I called Wells Fargo within 5 minutes of hanging up with the person who had scammed me out of $25,000. And Wells Fargo was basically useless from the beginning. ”

She reported that she had been transferred to a few different locations and was asked if she had changed her online passwords (which she had), adding, “When I got to the fraud department, the first thing this woman told me was “How are you doing? This scam?”
