West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice on Wednesday appointed the chief of staff’s wife to the vacant judge post.
Stephanie Abraham was selected to replace Judge Duke Bloom as a replacement for the position of Judge of the Cannowa County Circuit, which is vacant following the retirement of Judge Duke Bloom, whose term expires in December 2024. Abraham is the wife of Justice Department Chief of Staff Brian Abraham.
Abraham is the legal counsel for the State Board of Education. She was also a State Supreme Court Legal Clerk and taught business law at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical Colleges. Abraham graduated from Syracuse University in 2000 and received a law degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

“We are not going to punish a great candidate or someone as qualified as she is just because she is a hard worker and is my chief of staff’s wife,” Justice said at a media briefing on Wednesday. Ta. “She has no chance of penalizing this great woman. Her career speaks for itself and she’s a great woman who’s done a great job. And she will continue to do just that.”

Brian Abraham’s name was not mentioned in a subsequent news release issued by the Governor’s Office regarding the appointment.
