For Masai Russell, preparing before a track meet is more important than being in tip-top shape when he crosses the finish line. “When I wear makeup, I feel like I step into my alter ego,” the 24-year-old sprinter and hurdler tells SELF. “I feel like Beauty and the Beast.”
Ms. Russell took us on a tour of the preparations for the first-ever all-female major track and field event, ATHROS, held in New York City this past weekend. Thirty-six elite runners, including Gabby Thomas, Brittany Brown and Nia Atkins, competed alongside Russell at the inaugural Athros meet, which ended with Megan Thee Stallion’s performance and the biggest prize for women’s track competition. I was proud. Although she just won her first (gold!) Olympic medal, the honor of competing in this special event was not lost on Russell, who placed third in the 100m hurdles. “I’m so excited to be participating in the all-women’s competition,” she says to herself. “It just means the world becomes a part of it. [of Athlos]And to be one of the best women to compete in this event. And I can always say, I was the first one! ”
Russell doesn’t play around when it comes to preparation, whether it’s on the track or in make-up. She begins: caudalie moisturizer And the serum provides a smooth, long-lasting base for her other products. The Foundation doesn’t actually belong to her. Instead, she sticks to a more targeted concealer application. she uses ultra pigment luminous silk cheek tint When the Armani beauty competes, she defines her cheekbones as: MAC Skinfinish Sunstruck Matte Bronzer. And for that finishing shimmer (which occurs at different points mid-sprint), she manages to do it with the help of a little Rihanna and Serena Williams product. Fenty highlighter and win lip serum.
“People always ask me, ‘How do you keep your eyelashes from falling out when you’re running?'” Russell says. Her secret: duo lash glue, and very Meticulous application method (worth seeing in itself). And when it comes to setting sprays, you should only get a product lecture from a professional athlete, TBH. She prefers the following combinations: MAC Fix+ and One/size.
Perfect makeup isn’t Russell’s only pregame ritual. She also planned to drink a Chipotle bowl and watch a motivational speech before lacing up her spikes. But it was the perfect way to get into the zone, especially for Athros. At its core, the event is about highlighting female athletes and showcasing the bold, beautiful and diverse experiences of women in elite competition. Check out Russell’s complete routine below.
