Corbyn has done it again. That’s not “it.”

Patrick Corbin won just two games in his first 25 games this season, slashing .311/.361/.505 with a 5.92 ERA and 4.58 FIP in 135 at-bats. ¹⁄₃ The number of innings pitched in these games.

With the final season of Corbin’s six-year contract drawing to a close, Martinez was asked before last night’s series opener against the Marlins what he thought of the left-hander’s tenure in D.C.

“For me, every time he pitches, I know what I’m going to get out of him, right?” the manager told reporters at LawnDepot Park. “I mean, for better or worse, he’s going to get the ball in his hands every five days and give it everything he can. So, who knows what’s going to happen this winter. He knows how I feel about him. I’ve never given up on him, as he knows. But he’s big for this team. I mean, we’re not going to win the World Series without him. I’m happy he’s here. We still have some starts left. So, we’re going to finish out the season and see where we are.”

Corbin followed up his recent success (his eighth win in eight games against Miami this season) with another win for the Nationals. Corbin held the Fish to just two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out eight of the 26 batters he faced and threw just 93 pitches, 58 of which were strikes, in five innings. ²⁄₃ He pitched one inning in the 6-2 win.

Corbin earned himself another win with 15 strikeouts (nine on sliders) and 15 called strikes (ten on four-seam pitches).

“Patrick Corbin was amazing again. It was great to watch,” Martinez said after the win.

What does Corbin think about the game against the Marlins and his recent success as a starter?

“I think he should try not to get in the middle of the plate,” Corbin said last night. Quote from MASN’s Bobby Blanco“… He has a good mix of cutters and sliders and changes speeds. He works well with Kavert. He scores a lot of runs on offense and he’s playing well defensively.”

“My team has been playing well behind me and it was good to get an early lead tonight.”

“I feel really comfortable,” Corbin said of his latest cutter.

“I’ll be throwing to both lefties and righties. Like I said, I’ll vary the speed with my slider, but I’ll try to stay out of the middle of the plate and be able to get strikeouts when I need to. So I’ll just keep doing what’s worked so far and go from there.”

“His slider has gotten a lot better, but the key is keeping the ball down,” Martinez said. “And the credit goes to him for keeping the ball down.”

“The minute he throws the ball, he hits it hard, so today we really tried to keep everything in check.”
