Davis of NATS’ MIX:
Zach Davis, who turned 31 in early February, has started 18 league games. arizona diamondbacks In 2023, he posted a 7.00 ERA, 4.58 FIP, 39 walks (4.26 BB/9), 72 strikeouts (7.87 K/9), and an ugly .295/.370/.461 line compared to ’82. 1⁄3 Number of innings pitched.
Davis signed with D.C. on Feb. 17, and Nationals manager Davey Martinez told reporters Washington that the veteran addition added depth to the club.
“We really don’t have enough hands here,” the captain said. He knows himself really well. He’s not a guy that throws 100 miles per hour, but he’s very effective and we liked him, so we asked him to come here and stretch a little bit and see where he is. I would like to give you a chance to see it. ”
Davis has started 200 career games in nine major league seasons, posting a 4.36 ERA, 4.48 FIP, and a .262/.326/.426 batting line, and the Nationals hope to get him back on track and make him a better player. I hope he can make some good pitches. Between 2015 and his 2020 (123 starts, 3.79 ERA, 4.18 FIP in 683 games. 2⁄3 IP), as opposed to the pitching he has been the past three years (5.43 ERA, 77 GS, 5.02 FIP at 364 2⁄3 IP).
“Looking back, a lot of his mistakes were just mistakes,” Martinez said of scouting Davis before signing him.
The right-handed pitcher struggled with oblique and back problems last season, and told reporters after signing that he wanted to put the injury behind him and return to the activities that brought him success in the past.
“I went through some injuries last year, so just try to get healthy,” he explained.
“I finished the season healthy, and while I’m going to spend the offseason implementing routines to keep my body healthy and trying to put the injury behind me, mentally I’m going to focus on what I want to do this year. ”
Part of that process was looking back at what I felt went wrong last season.
“I think I got too involved as a pitcher and tried too much to make myself better in some ways instead of being myself,” Davis said. Well, I think we’ve gone too far from that. ”
“We want to be able to be more in tune with what he was doing before,” Martinez said.
“And we’re not afraid to throw the ball over the plate, throw strikes, push him forward a little bit. And we’ll see how it goes for him.”
“I went into this year with the goal of getting back to myself, enjoying the game, and enjoying every moment of being in the game, no matter how I performed,” Davis said. “I’m a big believer, like a lot of people, that I’m my own worst critic. When I’m not performing, I don’t try to put a coat on the surface. But in that moment, I realize that I’m my own worst critic. I think we’ve lost a little bit of the reason why we’re here, to go back to the roots of enjoying this game, winning ballgames, and just playing baseball. So this offseason, the big thought for me was , I think it was, “No matter where you are or what you’re doing, go out and have fun and enjoy your time.” And go back to baseball. ”
Martinez liked what he saw from Davis in the bullpen earlier this spring.
“He threw the ball well, he threw a lot of strikes. He threw the ball well. His changeup was good, his curveball was good. I think he’ll throw one more shot. Then he’ll go live. Probably [BP] Then let’s see where he is. ”
Davis made his first start in the spring Grapefruit League late last month, pitching two scoreless innings, walking two and striking out three.
“Overall the command felt pretty good,” Davis told reporters after the trip. Quoted by Mark Zuckerman of MASN.
“In the bottom of the second inning, I got a little tired and tried to rush to the plate, and I think I started to miss things around my arm. But in the first inning, I felt really good, fluid, controlled. I felt like that. I think it’s kind of the nervousness and anxiety of getting back in the game and doing too much. But I’m ready to go to work for the next five days and go out again next time.”
Davis’ second start was postponed due to rain on Sunday afternoon.
Scary moment, best case scenario:
Daylen Lyle, a 21-year-old 2021 second-round pick out of Louisville, Kentucky, missed the 2022 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, but returned last year and batted .269/.355 overall. /.452 was recorded. He appeared in 106 games and 465 at-bats with Class A Fredericksburg and High-A Wilmington.
Davis was one of the prospects who traveled to play against the Nationals. Red Sox On the road in Ft. Playing as a defensive substitute in Myers, Fla., on Saturday, he chased a home run over the outfield wall at the Sox’ spring home, flipped over and fell on his back, much to the horror of Boston’s right-field and center field relievers. . field bullpen.
About 10 minutes later, Lyle was alarmed and carried off the field on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital.
Several long, scary moments followed this play, but Daylen Lyle was still on the ground. He appears to be on a medical stretcher with a large brace around his neck.
The bullpen reaction is horrible.

“When we got away from him, he was moving his feet,” Nats captain Davey Martinez said. Quoted by Mark Zuckerman of MASN.
“I hope everything comes back negative. We’re going to pray for him and hopefully everything goes well.”
This incident was frightening for the manager and everyone involved.
“When you see someone go over the wall like that, and you don’t see him get up and everyone in the bullpen starts calling you, you think, ‘Oh no,'” Martinez said. Told. “I just hope he didn’t hit his head or his neck. All these things go through his head when he starts running.”
Thankfully, early reports from doctors relayed by the Nationals’ manager were positive.
Daylen Lyle’s back test results were negative. Lower back bruise. He is in pain but will be able to play once the pain subsides. Best case scenario. A huge sense of relief.

Daylen Lyle was released from the hospital and returned to West Palm Beach. Although he is in pain, all of his test results were negative and he was diagnosed with a lower back contusion.
Davey Martinez said Lyle was extremely lucky and this was the best-case scenario.

“Everything was negative,” Martinez said Sunday. Quoted by MASN’s Bobby Blanco.
“He has a lower back bruise. I mean, he’s hurt. But he’s going to be okay, which is great news. We were lucky.”
“I watched it about 10 times last night and he was really lucky,” Martinez added.
“So the fact that he was able to flip that far, I know it still hurts, but it could have been much worse. So we’re grateful.”
