Ohio-based financier union home mortgage Denied allegations of sexism by a former employee who was fired while pregnant. The lender acknowledged the dismissal but denied any wrongdoing.
Elizabeth Martin, a former loan officer assistant at UHM, filed a lawsuit earlier this year before the 16th Judicial Circuit in Jackson County, Missouri, under the Missouri Human Rights Code and Title 7 of the Civil Rights Code to have sex and/or become pregnant. Claimed and filed a lawsuit against the lender. .
Martin said she told her boss, Robert Hastings, sales manager Josh Kerr, and the human resources department at the lender, as early as January 2022 and no later than June 2022.
According to the complaint, Martin served as an assistant loan officer at UHM from March 1, 2021 until his “wrongful dismissal” on August 11, 2022. Former Loan Officer Assistant has completed paperwork for absenteeism scheduled for July 2022. Her expected maternity leave she was due to start on August 10, 2022.
On Aug. 5, 2022, Martin said he had a conversation with Carr in which he raised concerns about Hastings’ possible retirement and the treatment of loans allocated while on maternity leave.
Kerr “assured Mr. Hastings that whether or not Mr. Hastings remained with UHM, one of his offices in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, would be able to place her in a position with UHM,” the complaint reads. It is
Mr. Hastings, the branch manager and loan officer, told Martin on Aug. 8 that he was leaving UHM and taking another loan officer’s assistant.
On August 11, Martin told the HR generalist that doctors had ordered bed rest for a high-risk pregnancy. Martin emailed a copy of her doctor’s orders to Carr that morning, according to her complaint.
That same day, however, Martin received a phone call from HR saying there were no vacancies in the company and that his benefits would end at the end of the month.
In its latest response to Martin’s allegations, UHM confirmed the termination of the former employee but denied that those responsible for the termination were aware of her pregnancy.
UHM had “legitimate and non-discriminatory grounds” for its actions regarding Martin.
“Some UHM employees were aware of her pregnancy. We deny that,” the financier said on Aug. 17.
UHM, the lender and attorneys representing Martin did not respond to requests for comment.
Union Home Mortgage Sued caliber mortgage Allegedly trying to “paralyze” the company’s Southeastern operations last year.
Caliber claimed UHM raided more than 50 employees who generated $400 million in mortgages in 2021.
UHM originated $1.75 billion in 1H 2023 originations, according to mortgage software firm data Modex. As of August, Modex had 908 active loan officers, according to Modex data.
